Description
Precision Engine Monitoring for Superior Preventative Maintenance
Take control of your vehicle’s maintenance schedule with the Hardline Products® Inductive Hour/Tach Meter. Engineered for versatility and durability, this essential diagnostic tool works on any gasoline engine up to 8 cylinders, making it perfect for motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, PWCs, marine outboards, and generators.
Whether you are managing high-performance 4-stroke motocross bikes with strict service intervals or tracking hours on a marine engine, this meter provides the data you need to extend engine life and maintain peak performance.
“A hour meter, plain and simple. Four-strokes live and die by how much time you put on them.” — Mitch Payton, Pro-Circuit® (as interviewed in Motocross Action Magazine)
Key Features & Benefits

Frequently Asked Questions
Installation & Compatibility
Q: How do I mount my hour meter? A: Our hour meters include two-sided tape and two serrated screws for mounting. You can use the tape and/or the screws. The tape alone is enough to hold the meter in most applications. You can mount your hour meter anywhere except on exhaust manifolds or mufflers. High engine heat temperature will not affect the meter. Vibration and water will not harm your meter either. Choose a location that is easy to read but out of the way from moving parts or an area where meter could be struck or scraped off.
Q: Why is my screen always on? is this killing the battery? A: Our screens always stay “Lit” so you can glance at the meter anytime to read the hours. This does not affect the 10 year battery life of your meter.
Q: How do you install an inductive hour meter? A: Installation is simple with our patented one-wire inductive pickup. Just wrap the wire around your spark plug wire—no cutting, splicing, or hard-wiring required. It works on any 1 to 8-cylinder gas engine.
Q: How do I know my meter is working? A: When installed correctly the “hour-glass” icon on the left hand side of the meter will flash when the engine is running. Remember it will take 6 minutes of running before you see “.1” on the screen for total hours.
Q: Will this tachometer work on fuel-injected engines? A: Absolutely. The meter is universally compatible with modern fuel-injected models and “pencil coil” ignitions, provided the vehicle utilizes a 1 or 2-cylinder gasoline engine (either 2-stroke or 4-stroke).
Q: I am not getting the correct RPM reading even when I make an input adjustment from 2P/1R to 1P/1R or vice versa. A: If you have made input adjustments but this still has not solved the incorrect RPM reading try wrapping the black pick-up wire a few times around both spark plug wires and then returning it to the hour meter. Depending on the electrical system and the engine phasing this installation adjustment may solve your problem.
Q: I am still not getting the correct RPM reading, it seems to be double the RPM’s? A: Many engines have a waste spark that will end up giving you a false RPM. Try changing the inputs, if you have a 3 cylinder engine you may have to adjust the input on the meter to a 6 cylinder to get the correct RPM. If you have a 2 cylinder engine you have have to adjust the input to 4 cylinder.
Q: Do I have to distinguish between 2/4 stroke when choosing a setting A: No.
Features & Operation
Q: How do I adjust the desired RPM input on the meter? A: Hold the grey button down continuously to scroll to RPM inputs such as “1P/1R” “2P/1R”. Let off the button when desired function is seen let off the button, your desired Input will be flashing. Touch button once to record that input.
Q: What is an inductive hour meter? A: An inductive hour meter tracks engine runtime and RPMs by sensing electrical pulses from the spark plug. Our meter automatically switches between a tachometer when the engine is running and an hour meter when off.
Q: What is TM1 and TM2 at the top right side of the screen? A: If you see TM1 or TM2 when you push the button and scroll, you have an hour meter that includes two trip meters. Just like the trip meter on your car you can reset the trip meters when ever you desire or leave them to accumulate. Use the TM1 and TM2 function for air filter changes or top end rebuilds. Total hours accumulated will not be reset. To reset hold button down to scroll to TM1 or TM2. Release button and then hold down until trip hours reset to 0. Do this for each “TM1” and “TM2” modes.
Durability & Lifespan
Q: Is the Hardline Products hour meter waterproof? A: Yes, it features an IP-68 waterproof rating. The meter is 100% epoxy-encapsulated, making it completely resistant to complete water submersion, heavy dust, shock, and extreme vibration.
Q: Does the hour meter have a replaceable battery? A: No, the unit features a sealed, internal lithium battery designed to last for 10 years. This completely sealed design ensures maximum durability and maintains the IP-68 waterproof rating throughout the meter’s lifespan.
Q: Is the hour meter I get been on the shelve for 2 years and now I only have eight years of life left? A: No, your hour meter is typically 2-3 weeks old, that’s it! We are the largest manufacture of hour meters and we can’t make them fast enough!
Q: How do I get a longer wire on this hour meter? A: This wire can not be lengthened as it is plumbed into the meter. If you need a hour meter that can take a longer wire use HR-8063-2.
Q: I purchased your hour meter for my new four stroke and the coil must be built into the plug cap as it doesn’t have a spark plug wire. Is there another way to connect it? A: The newer four-strokes engines and motorcycles (YZF, CRF, KXF, etc..) have the coil mounted right on top of the spark plug, thus there is no coil wire running down to the plug like the old days! No problem, our hour meter will still work. Wrap the wire around the circumference of the boot or the round epoxy case that covers the spark plug. A few revolutions around the boot or coil head will suffice. Call us at 888-413-8315 and we will try to help.
Q: I have a pen-stick coil and wrapping your pick-up wire around the outside of the coil but the hour meter will still not record time A: Sometimes the coils are very insulated and you have to remove the coil and push our pick-up wire down into the hole where the spark plug is, then reinstall the coil and test again.
